Plantar fasciitis

Definition

Plantar fascia is a thick band that runs along the sole from the heel to each of the toes. It sustains the arch of the foot, absorbs the shock, and helps lifting the weight bearing foot. Plantar fasciitis is a condition caused by inflammation by extensive stress or weight bearing causes pain.

Symptoms

  • 1.First step in the morning exhibits the worst pain
  • 2.Walking reduces the pain
  • 3.Standing up after extended sitting can trigger severe pain

Cause

  • Uncomfortable shoes, such as a very high heel or overly flat shoes
  • Sports or activities that burden the soles
  • Sudden shock to soles
  • Foot deformity, flat feet or high-arched feet

Treatment

Diagnosis : physical examination, X-ray, CT, MRI, electromyography

Non-surgical treatment

  • Medication
  • Physiotherapy
  • Extracorporeal shock wave

Surgical treatment

  • Fascia release
  • Fasciotomy
